Memory [Re]constructed
The driving thought behind this work is nostalgia. Everyone has their own concept of nostalgia, and it is something that only they can grasp. Nostalgia ties in with memories, emotions, and time, while recreating scenes of events in people’s minds that they hold onto. Using the scientific and biological basis that harbors memories in order to conceptualize this piece, I aim to make the images recognizable and unrecognizable at the same time. Due to the fact that time is a slow and gradual process, that is not normally detected when passed, I realized that I would definitely need to make the transition in my paintings seamless as well to elicit the same effect. Being that time is a challenging yet somewhat popular topic to focus on within the medium of painting, I am interested in the idea of how paintings hold time, be outside of time, or just be out of time. I quite appreciated how this idea highlights the temporality of painting. Using this approach I focused on how the medium/materiality of a painting became the translation of the piece rather than its identifier.
